As a result of its approximate composition of 20% Cr, 25% Ni, 4.0% Mo, and 1.5% Cu, it has a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of approximately 43. The product was developed specifically for use in sulphuric acid, usually at a concentration of 20% to 85%.
The stainless steel 904 is austenitic steel. In comparison to 316L, its molybdenum addition gives it superior resistance to localized attack (pitting and crevice corrosion) by chlorides as well as superior resistance to reducing acids, whereas its copper addition provides useful corrosion resistance against all concentrations of sulfuric acid. Due to its high alloy content, it is also more resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, although it is still susceptible. The low carbon content of the material makes it resistant to sensitization by welding and prevents corrosion between the grains.
