Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!An austenitic stainless steel with a high alloy content is 904L (UNS N08904, 1.4539). A pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of around 43 is achieved by its approximate composition of 20% Cr, 25% Ni, 4.0% Mo, and 1.5% Cu. Specifically, it was developed for use in sulphuric acid, mainly in concentrations between 20% and 85%.
The stainless steel 904L is austenitic. It’s molybdenum addition provides it with better resistance to chloride localized attack (pitting and crevice corrosion) and greater resistance to reducing acids compared to 316L. In particular, its copper addition provides it with useful corrosion resistance to sulphuric acid concentrations at all concentrations. Despite its high alloy content, it is still susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Low carbon content makes it resistant to sensitization by welding and prevents intergranular corrosion.
