Founded in 2014, MetalWorldTop/Heidi provides stainless steel and corrosion-resistant process piping, plates, and bars to UPM for Pulp & Paper. UPM is building a 2.1 million tonne greenfield eucalyptus pulp mill near Paso de Los Toros in central Uruguay. The mill is scheduled to start production by the end of March 2023. Besides the mill, the total investment of USD 3 billion also includes a pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo as well as investments in local facilities in Paso de Los Toros.
Stainless Steel Applications In Pulp and Paper Industry
Stainless steel is crucial in the pulp and paper industry due to its excellent properties, such as corrosion resistance, durability, and strength. It is widely used in various pulp and paper production applications, including in equipment, machinery, and piping systems. Some of the common uses of stainless steel in the pulp and paper industry include:
Digesters: Stainless steel is used to construct pulp digesters, which are large vessels used for chemically treating wood chips to break them down into pulp. The high resistance of stainless steel to corrosion, even in highly acidic environments, makes it suitable for this application.
Piping systems: Stainless steel pipes and fittings are extensively used in pulp and paper mills for conveying various fluids, chemicals, and slurries. These pipes resist corrosion, erosion, and chemical attacks, making them ideal for handling corrosive liquids used in production.
Screens and filters: Stainless steel screens and filters are used in the pulp and paper industry for separation, filtration, and dewatering processes. They are highly durable and resistant to corrosion. They can withstand high temperatures and pressures, making them suitable for these demanding applications.
Rollers and cylinders: Stainless steel rollers and cylinders are used in various stages of the paper production process, such as drying, calendaring, and coating. Stainless steel’s excellent strength, resistance to wear, and corrosion resistance make it ideal for these applications, where high precision and durability are required.
Tanks and vessels: Stainless steel tanks and plates are used for storing and processing various chemicals, liquids, and pulps in the pulp and paper industry. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and chemical attacks ensures that the stored materials remain uncontaminated and that the tanks and vessels have a long service life.
Refiners and beaters: Stainless steel is used in constructing refiners and beaters, used in the pulp and paper production process to treat the pulp fibres and improve their mechanical properties. Stainless steel’s durability and resistance to wear and corrosion make it ideal for these high-stress applications.
