Low alloy piping materials are often called chrome moly materials because of the chemical makeup of Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium (Cr). Chromium increases the hardness and strength and only minimally reduces elasticity. Molybdenum improves tensile strength and especially heat resistance. Furthermore, it has a favorable influence on the welding properties. Moly is the most effective single additive that increases high-temperature creep strength. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel and inhibits pitting. The composition of chrome-moly alloy steel makes it ideal for use in power plants, refineries, petrochemical plants, and oil field services where fluids and gases are transported at extremely high temperatures and pressures.

Low alloy materials are by the ASTM standards known as P-grades. The most frequently used P-grades are P5, P9, P11, P22, and P91. With regards to the power industry and the petrochemical industry, P11 UNS K11597, P22 UNS K21590, and P91 UNS K91560 are most frequently used, as these alloys ensure longer mechanical lifetime, do not deteriorate and provide improved creep resistance properties. P5 UNS K41545 and P9 UNS K90941 are commonly used in refineries.

What is Low Alloy Steel

Low alloy steels are steels that contain less than 10% alloying elements. These steels have better mechanical properties than carbon steels and are used in the manufacture of various products such as pipes, plates, sheets, bars, and more. The addition of alloying elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium improves the strength and toughness of these steels. Low alloy steels are used in various industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, and more.

Low Alloy Steel Plates (Sheet)

Low alloy steel plates contain less alloy elements below 3.5% of total elements. The addition of some alloy elements on the carbon steel basic is intended to improve the steel performance. Low alloy steel plates are mainly used in bridge building, shipbuilding, vehicles, boilers, pressure vessels, oil pipelines, large steel structures and more.

Steel plate is a flat-rolled steel product which is more than 200 mm wide and more than 6.0 mm thick or more than 1,220 mm wide and 5 mm thick. The steel plate rolling mills normally have a working-roll width ranging from 2,000 mm to 5,600 mm. Hence the width of the steel plates rolled in a plate mill normally ranges from 1,500 mm to 5,000 mm ( popular range is 2,000 mm to 3,000 mm). The thickness of the steel plates rolled in a plate mill ranges from 5 mm to 200 mm. Some plate mills, however, have the capability to roll steel plates of thickness higher than 200 mm.
